North Platte, NE : A North Platte woman died on Sunday, June 4, 2017

A North Platte woman died Sunday after the car she was in struck three horses on U.S. Highway 83.

According to a statement from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were advised just before 4 a.m. Sunday that five horses were loose south of North Platte on Highway 83 near Echo School Road. When a deputy arrived, he found about 30 horses running loose.

As the deputy attempted to move the horses off the road, a northbound 2006 Chevrolet Aveo came over a hill and struck three of the horses.

The car was being driven by Shawn Tallmon, 49, of North Platte. Also in the vehicle were Tallmon’s wife, Dawn Tallmon, 46; son Randy, 19; and Emily Pellegrin, 18, all of North Platte.

Dawn Tallmon sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Great Plains Health, where she was pronounced dead. The other three occupants sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and were also taken to Great Plains Health.

The investigation is ongoing, but the sheriff’s office said drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash.
