Birmingham, AL : Pedestrian struck and killed by semi truck in downtown Birmingham on Thursday, December 18, 2014

A pedestrian was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler on the city's Southside early Thursday. The crash occurred along 10th Avenue South at 10th Place South near UAB about 5:30 a.m., according to police. The truck driver told police that it appeared the man was running toward his truck when he was hit by the truck's cab, Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards said. The roadway has been reopened and police continue to investigate the crash, Edwards said. Toxicology tests have been submitted -- a standard practice in fatal crashes, he added.
