Commerce, TX : Wednesday morning wreck on Highway 24 blocks traffic, no fatalities reported on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016
No fatalities have been reported in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 24 near Commerce Wednesday morning.
According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, a driver of a semi-truck heading northbound on Highway 24 near the Texas A&M University-Commerce Animal Science Educational Farm turned in on a black Chevy Suburban, striking the front passenger side of the vehicle. There were five occupants inside the Suburban, and all were airlifted out of the area. Four were taken to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville, while a fifth passenger was taken to the Medical Center in Plano. The driver of the semi was taken to the Hunt Regional Emergency Medical Center in Commerce.
Traffic was blocked on both sides of Highway 24 as medical helicopters landed on scene. The southbound lanes were opened after the helicopters departed, with the northbound lanes being closed for another half-hour.
According to the DPS, the semi driver did not see the Suburban, and turned in on it. No fatalities have been reported due to the accident as of this writing, and the identities of the involved parties have not been released. Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews, who was at the scene, stated that the occupants of the Suburban were traveling to A&M-Commerce to move into a residence hall on campus for the coming school year.
