Charleston, SC : Averill Park grad dies in hit-and-run accident on Saturday, 29th October 2016

The Averill Park community is in mourning after a recent high school graduate was killed outside his college Saturday by an alleged drunk driver.
Ryan Bielawa, a 2015 Averill Park graduate, was crossing a commercial street just south of the Coastal Carolina University campus in South Carolina early Saturday morning when he was struck by a car.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported that the driver left the scene of the accident around 12:45 a.m., but returned soon afterward. City of Conway police subsequently charged Edward Lee Washington of Conway with driving under the influence and charges in South Carolina called death results and driving under suspension.
Washington was being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $51,234 bail, the Sun News reported.
Bielawa's mother, MaryEllen, said State Police arrived at her door at 3 a.m. Saturday with the news that her son had died. It was later, after speaking with the Conway police and Coastal Carolina's dean of students, that she learned of the driver's arrest and charges.
Bielawa, 19, was a soccer and basketball player at Averill Park, and spent his summers jet skiing, water skiing and boating on Burden Lake where his family lives. He also attended La Salle Institute for one year.
His mother said the finance major was very interested in investing his money, and that "his claim to fame was he was going to be a millionaire by 25," she said.
MaryEllen Bielawa said her son was well-liked and had many friends from his hometown. "He was a great kid. Always smiling. Very positive attitude," she said.
In addition to his mother, Bielawa is survived by his father, Edward, his older brother, Kevin, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services might be scheduled for later in the week.
Coastal Carolina University held a meeting Saturday afternoon in which they offered counseling and other services to students who knew Bielawa. The Sun News reported that the crash remains under investigation by Conway police and the South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT Team.
