The driver accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian in north Nashville has been arrested.

Hassan Jackson, 39, was allegedly driving his Chevy Tahoe along 22nd Avenue North when he hit a man near Heiman Street around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The victim, 58-year-old Gerald Dunn, was trying to get into the driver's side door of a minivan when he was hit. He died at the scene.

One of Dunn's friends said he was a good man and did everything he could to help the people around him.

"The man stepped out into the street. He said he was going to the store, and then when he got into the street, the car just hit him ... no lights, no nothing, so I guess he didn't see it coming because I didn't even see it," said Leon Gooch Jr.

Gooch heard the crash and called 911.

"Well, I saw the guy who did the wreck ... He was sitting on the ground. The victim was lying there over there on the ground dying," he said.

Jackson is also accused of hitting two parked cars.

According to the police report, the responding officer said Jackson smelled of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and was slurring his words.

Jackson reportedly refused to undergo field sobriety tests or breath or alcohol testing.

Police obtained a blood sample and said they believe Jackson was driving under the influence.

According to the affidavit, Jackson's driver's license was revoked. He allegedly did not have insurance for his vehicle.

Jackson, of Jackson, TN, was taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries.

Jackson is charged with vehicular homicide, driving on a revoked license and driving without insurance. He is being held on $55,000 bond.
