CHARLES TOWN, WV : Two women killed in a single-vehicle crash on April, Tuesday 11th 2017
Charleston, West Virginia
The Charles Town Police Department has identified two women who were killed in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 340.
Kathryn D. Smith, 58, and Lisa D. Patterson, 50, died as a result of the crash, which was reported just before 3:15 p.m. around mile marker 9 near the interchange with W.Va. 9, police said in a news release Thursday.
A third occupant, John D. Smith, 59, was taken to Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson, W.Va., before being flown to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center for life-threatening injuries, police said.
The release did not provide an update on Smith's condition, described Wednesday by police Sgt. James Knott as stable but critical.
A preliminary investigation into the crash shows the southbound vehicle, driven by Kathryn Smith, drove off the left side of the roadway and into the median, according to the release.
The driver overcorrected trying to regain control of the vehicle, causing it to roll multiple times, police said.
Patterson, a rear passenger, was thrown from the vehicle, according to police.
The highway was shut down for several hours as a result of the incident and ensuing investigation, which police said is ongoing.
