Niwot, CO : One killed after semi smashes into sedan at U.S. 287 and Niwot Road on Tuesday morning, June 14, 2016

One person was killed after a semitrailer smashed into a sedan and then plowed into a park-and-ride in Niwot on Tuesday morning, officials said.

The crash was reported at 10:10 a.m. at the intersection of Niwot Road and U.S. 287, according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid.

Reid said a woman driving a Volvo S40 north on U.S. 287 tried to turn left onto westbound Niwot Road at a yellow light at the same time a semitrailer heading south on U.S. 287 entered the intersection.

The truck tried to avoid the car by turning to the right, but smashed into the passenger side of the Volvo and sending the car into a traffic pole. The semi then veered off and hit three unoccupied cars parked in a park-and-ride on the southwest corner of the intersection.

Reid said the driver of the Volvo was declared dead on scene. Her identity will be released by the Boulder County Coroner's Office pending notification of her family.

The male driver and a passenger of the semi were not injured.

Reid said he did not know what light the semi had, but said if both vehicles had yellow lights, it would have been up to the Volvo to yield.

At this time, no citations have been issued, but the crash remains under investigation.

The crash snarled traffic at U.S. 287 for a few hours as crews cleaned up and investigated the scene.
