An Orem man was killed Saturday afternoon in an off-roading accident near Chimney Rock Pass in southwest Utah County.
According to Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff's Office, dispatch officers received a 911 call at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday that Forrest McCombs, 21, of Orem, had been involved in an accident close to mile marker seven of Redwood Road, about seven miles north of Elberta.
The area, Cannon said is popular for off-roading, and McCombs was off-roading with some friends in a 1998 Ford Explorer.
Cannon said McCombs's friend, Brandon Kocherhans, 21, also of Orem, riding in the passenger seat of the Explorer up a steep incline when the vehicle lost traction. It then slid and rolled 200 feet down the mountain side. Kocherhans was wearing a seat belt.
Witnesses on scene attempted to revive McCombs before AirCare arrived on scene to transport McCombs to Mountainview Hospital in Payson. But he was pronounced dead on the scene after sustaining substantial injuries to his head.
Open containers of alcohol were found in the vehicle. The sheriff's office is investigating if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
