A car splashed into a retention pond early Thursday on Duval Street in St. Augustine, but the driver escaped and fled before investigators got on scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Chevrolet Impala was headed north at 2:30 a.m. on Duval Street south of West 15th Street when its unknown driver veered off the road, hit a chain-link fence and continued northwest directly into a pond, according to the Highway Patrol. The driver got out as the car submerged and disappeared. No one else was found in the sunken car when the St. Johns County emergency dive team searched it.
