SCOTTSBLUFF, NE : A 46-year-old bicyclist suffered injuries after he was struck by a truck on Thursday, June 15, 2017

A 46-year-old bicyclist suffered injuries after he was struck by a truck Thursday morning.

Brett Hemphill, 46, of Scottsbluff, was transported to Regional West Medical in an accident that occurred at Broadway and East Overland at about 6:45 a.m. Sgt. Phil Eckerberg said that Hemphill was walking, with assistance, after the accident.

Eckerberg said that Hemphill had been traveling in the wrong direction as East Overland, on the BNSF Railroad right of way. A truck driver, Saul Esparza, 48, of Scottsbluff, had been traveling north on Broadway and turned right to go east on East Overland. Esparza struck Hemphill.

Hemphill was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Eckerberg said the accident is an example of why bicyclists should follow laws and rules of the road. He reminds bicyclists that they are they are required by law to ride as far to the right as practical and that they should travel in the correct direction. Bicyclists must follow the rules of the road, including abiding by stop signs and traffic lights and travel on one-way streets. It is also recommended that bicyclists wear a helmet, high visibility clothing, and have front and rear lights.

A free bicycle safety brochure is available at the Police Department along with bicycle licenses which are available for $5.
