AUBURN, NH : A moose caused a four-car crash on Thursday, August 31, 2017
A moose caused a four-car crash early Thursday morning on Route 101 in Auburn, officials said.
State police said they responded to a report of a multi-car crash on Route 101 East around 12:50 a.m.
Investigators said Madgalie Wakefield, 58, of Candia, was driving a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle sedan when she struck a moose that was standing in the middle of the eastbound travel lanes on Route 101.
Eli Corson, 22, of Exeter, was driving a 2016 Ford F-150 behind Wakefield and struck the moose after it fell down in the left travel lane.
Corson pulled over to the right side of the road, where his pickup car was struck by a 2008 Honda Civic driven by Marcos Freitas, 62, of Manchester.
State police said Freitas was trying to avoid the moose in the left travel lane when he struck Corson's car and the guardrail.
Finally, Christopher Aikens, 33, of Antrim, was operating a 2015 Freightliner tractor-trailer behind Freitas and also struck the moose in the left travel lane.
Corson and Aikens were not injured, but Wakefield and Freitas were taken to Elliot Hospital with minor injuries.
The eastbound side of Route 101 was closed for about an hour while troopers investigated the crash and the moose and vehicles were removed from the road.
