Crash victim identified as Hartly woman
Delaware State Police have identified the woman killed in a crash west of Smyrna as Doris M. Johnson, 84, of Hartly.

Johnson died at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital after being taken there from the crash scene, division spokesman Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale said.

The crash occurred at about 11:35 a.m. June 14 on Wheatley’s Pond Road, east of Bryn Zion Road, near Smyrna. The police investigation showed the driver of a 2006 Toyota Highlander, identified as José Tuma-Aid, 75, of Hartly, was headed westbound when he fell asleep and drifted off the edge of the road onto the shoulder.

Tuma-Aid’s SUV hit the left rear of Johnson’s Chevrolet Cavalier which was stopped on the westbound shoulder of Wheatley’s Pond Road, pushing it into a ditch and back onto the roadway.

The Highlander traveled a short distance before stopping in a small ditch, Hale said.

Johnson, who was wearing her seatbelt, was treated at the scene by Kent County paramedics and then taken to KGH.

Tuma-Aid also was wearing a seatbelt, and was treated for his injuries at the scene. He also was taken to KGH, but with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, and alcohol is not considered to be a factor, Hale said.
