New Orleans, LA : 19-year-old Mississippi woman dies after Slidell crash: state police on Monday, December 12th 2016

A 19-year-old Mississippi woman died in a New Orleans hospital Monday (Dec. 12) after her car crashed into a tree and overturned, ejecting her, along Interstate 59 in Slidell, according to Louisiana State Police.

Denise A. Phillips of Pass Christian was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which occurred shortly before 3 p.m. just north of Interstate 10, police said.

An initial investigation shows Phillips was driving a Kia Optima northbound on I-59, in the right lane. For reasons that remain under investigation, Phillips lost control of her vehicle, causing the car to leave the roadway to the right. That's when the car struck a tree and overturned, ejecting Phillips, police said.

Phillips sustained moderate injuries in the crash and was transported in critical condition to an area hospital by Acadian Air.

She died shortly after her arrival at the hospital, according to police.

Investigators do not suspect impairment as a factor in the crash.

As part of the ongoing investigation, troopers obtained blood samples from Phillips for analysis by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
