The driver of the semi was transported to Nebraska Medicine via medical helicopter, according to authorities at the scene.
"This is my driveway," witness Patty Holeman said. "I'll think about it every time I pull out of my driveway."
Aerial photos from a KETV viewer showed a column of black smoke after the crash, and a line of traffic on the road behind it.By the time I called 911, the pickup was completely engulfed in fire," Holeman said. "There were three people that stopped on the highway and drug the semi driver out and to safety."
Officials at the scene say there could be damage to the road that they will have to assess and repair.
I was in the house and I heard and saw a huge explosion," witness Carolyn Moenning said. "I looked and I saw the smoke coming up and I knew it was bad."
Sheriff Steve Hespen said both people likely died instantly.
This is the worst collision that we've had for quite some time, as far as the magnitude of the damage and the overall outcome of the accident itself," Hespen said. "We had a witness statement that indicated they didn't see any erratic driving on the part of the SUV prior to the collision. So basically, right now, that's all we have to go on."
