Denair, CA : Hughson man injured in all-terrain vehicle crash on a country road on Wednesday, December 16, 2015
A young man from Hughson driving an all-terrain vehicle on a country road suffered major injuries Wednesday when he was hit by a car north of Denair.
The man, whose name and age were not available Wednesday evening, was driving in the roadway east on Grayson Road approaching Gratton Road at about 4:40 p.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Cuck Leon.
At the same time Martha Bira, 34, of Denair, was in a Nissan Pathfinder traveling south on Gratton approaching Grayson.
Investigators believe the driver of the ATV ran a stop sign and was hit by the Nissan in the intersection.
Leon said north and southbound traffic on Gratton is not required to stop at the intersection. He didn't know how fast the Nissan was traveling but said the speed limit there is 55 mph.
The Nissan continued on a short distance, pinning the ATV between it and a tree in a nearby orchard. The ATVs driver was ejected before the ATV hit the tree. He suffered major injuries and was taken by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center.
The driver of the Nissan was not injured.
Leon said the ATV driver was not wearing a helmet. He said it is not legal to drive an ATV in the roadway unless it is being used for farming purposes.
