Belleville, IL : Driver seriously injured in crash on Tuesday, 10th April 2018

A crash between a car and semi closed two lanes of northbound Interstate 55/70 near Fairmont City and Illinois 111, according to state police.

A passenger vehicle was stopped on the shoulder of the interstate for an unknown reason at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. said. The vehicle re-entered the road traveling at a slow rate of speed, and the semi driver struck the rear end of the car.

"There was nothing the semi could do to prevent hitting them," Dye said. "There was no way the tanker could stop."

The driver of the car, who is from Jacksonville, Illinois, was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, Dye said. There were no passengers in the car. The semi driver was not injured.
