Ithaca, NY : Elmira driver killed in wrong-way crash on Interstate 86 Tuesday 4 October 2016
An Elmira man was killed while driving the wrong way on Route 17/Interstate 86 after leaving a rest area.
New York State Police in Owego said they responded just before 3 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a car driving the wrong direction as it left the Nichols rest area on state Route 17.
Prior to arriving, troopers were told that the car driving the wrong way had crashed head-on into another car that was traveling eastbound.
The driver who was traveling in the wrong direction, John B. McCarthy, 90, of Elmira, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car that McCarthy crashed into, Sandra Spaeth, 65, of Rome, Pennsylvania, was taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Tioga County Coroner Stewart Bennett responded to the crash scene. McCarthy was transported to Lourdes Hospital for autopsy at a later date, according to police.
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit assisted at the scene with the investigation.
