1 dead, dozens hurt in three area bus crashes in Los Angeles California
Three bus crashes on rain-slicked Southern California freeways killed one person and injured dozens more Thursday, authorities said.
A tour bus heading from the Los Angeles area to the Valley View Casino & Hotel in San Diego County overturned at about 2:30 p.m. on the southbound 15 Freeway near Fallbrook, authorities said.
At almost the same time, 24 people suffered minor to moderate injuries when a tour bus coming from the Pala Casino Spa & Resort in San Diego County overturned on the northbound 15 Freeway in Corona, authorities said.A call to the bus operator, Sina International in Walnut, was not immediately returned.
CHP Officer Travis Monks said everyone on the bus suffered minor to moderate injuries. There were no deaths or serious injuries on the bus heading to Orange County.
On Thursday night, a news release from the California Highway Patrol said driver Jian Fei Duan, 35, of Baldwin Park was traveling at 65 mph on the 15 in Corona and wasn’t able to maintain control of the bus on the wet road. The bus struck the center median guardrail and overturned on its side, blocking the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes, according to the release.
Emergency personnel responded from several agencies and a triage area was established to treat injuries to 23 passengers and Duan, authorities said.
A spokeswoman for Corona Regional Medical Center said two people were treated there for minor injuries.
A Sig Alert was issued on the northbound 15 Freeway at 2:42 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol, and all lanes were reopened at 8:13 p.m.
An earlier crash involving a transit bus elsewhere in Riverside County injured more than a dozen people, at least one seriously, authorities said. The bus was on Highway 74 near Perris at about 9 a.m. when it slid sideways and hit a Pontiac Bonneville traveling in the opposite direction, the CHP said. A tow truck following the Bonneville also hit the car.Fire officials said 14 people, including the driver of the car, were taken to hospitals. Most had minor injuries, but a CHP statement said the Bonneville’s driver, a 48-year-old woman, had major injuries.Riverside Transit Agency spokesman Brad Weaver said the bus driver suffered minor injuries and wasn’t taken to a hospital.
