Loveland,CO : Loveland crash ends chase on February, Sunday 25th 2018
A man was jailed after reportedly fleeing from law enforcement and crashing in Loveland Sunday, after authorities used spike strips on the road in three locations, each time deflating one of the tires.
Anthony Ryan Chavez, 28, of Brighton, was booked into the Larimer County Jail on Sunday for investigation of felony eluding, theft of motor vehicle parts and traffic offenses, said David Moore, spokesman for the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. He was arrested after crashing his car at 7:05 p.m. at Centerra Parkway and U.S. 34, according to Moore.
The incident began about 30 minutes earlier when a deputy attempted to stop a 1996 Chevrolet sedan at Northeast Frontage Road and Mulberry Street in Fort Collins for an alleged traffic violation, Moore said. The driver, later identified as Chavez, did not stop, according to Moore.
Instead, he reportedly ran several stop signs and fled south on Interstate 25, Moore reported.
"The highest reported speed that I can see in the call notes was 95 mph," Moore said. "Traffic was light."
Deputies requested help from the Loveland Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol as the pursuit headed toward Loveland on the interstate.
The vehicle reportedly exited the highway and headed westbound on U.S. 34 (Eisenhower Boulevard) at which point law enforcement stopped chasing the car because of heavy traffic, according to Moore.
However, a short time later, Loveland police officers spotted the car traveling in the other direction, east, on U.S. 34 near Interstate 25, Moore said. In the meantime, someone had changed the license plate on the vehicle, Moore said.
The chase picked back up and Chavez allegedly drove into Weld County, then made a U-turn and headed back toward Loveland. The Colorado State Patrol put spikes on the road at Weld County Road 17, and these deflated one tire. The Sheriff's Office put another set of spikes on U.S. 34 at County Line Road, which deflated a second tire, and Loveland police placed a third spike strip at Larimer Parkway, taking out a third tire, according to information from Moore.
Chavez allegedly tried to continue driving away and, when he attempted to turn north on to Centerra Parkway, hit a curb and stopped. Law enforcement officers approached the vehicle carefully with guns drawn in what is called a high-risk traffic stop, according to the Sheriff's Office.
They took Chavez and a female passenger into custody. The woman was later released without charges, while Chavez was booked into the jail, Moore said.
No serious injuries were reported.
Inside the vehicle, authorities found stolen construction equipment, according to Moore. Any possible charges from that are pending further investigation.
