A student from USC Upstate was killed in a fiery crash along I-85 in Spartanburg County, officials said
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol office, the crash happened around 3 a.m. Sunday near the mile 70 marker, between the I-26 and New Cut Road exits.
22-year-old Raziya Nicole Maria Prince of Mauldin's vehicle was northbound when it left the roadway, hit the guardrail, overturned and caught fire, troopers said.
Troopers said Prince, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected in the crash and died at the scene.
According to the Spartanburg County coroner, Prince died as a result of injuries from the crash.
Prince was majoring in elementary education and was expected to graduate in December, according to officials with USC Upstate.
Chancellor Tom Moore with USC Upstate released this statement Sunday:
Prince's father, Julius Prince describes, his daughter as a loving young lady who enjoyed life. “Raziya loved sports, spending time with her family and her friends. She enjoyed life and people and she was determined to be a teacher.”
Prince was pre-student teaching at Oakland Elementary School in Boiling Springs and worked at Walmart at Hillcrest, according to officials with the university.
Assistant vice chancellor for university communications at USC Upstate, Tammy E. Whaley said, “Raziya Prince had an incredibly bright future ahead of her as an elementary school teacher where she would have touched and influenced the lives of many."
Officials said Prince had previously attended Spartanburg Methodist College where she played basketball.
