Sierra, CA : Woman killed in crash in area of Rowher Flats on Saturday, January 10, 2015

A woman was killed and a man was airlifted to the hospital with minor injuries Saturday after their off-road vehicle drove off the side of a canyon road in the Rowher Flats area of Aqua Dulce and plunged about 1,500 feet, officials said.

About 2:05 p.m. first-responders received a 911 call that a vehicle had driven off a truck trail and plunged into a remote canyon about 2 miles northeast of an off-road vehicle staging area north of Sierra Highway in the Angeles National Forest.

“We had an off-road vehicle go over the side, approximately 1,500 feet,” Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Padilla said from the scene.

One of the occupants, an unidentified man, was flown to Antelope Valley Hospital with minor injuries, Padilla said.
Using a helicopter, county fire rescuers reached the wreckage, removing and transporting the injured man, then returning to recover the fatally injured woman, Padilla said.

“At this time we have our personnel performing a body recover with one DOA patient still in the vehicle,” he said around 3:30 p.m. “We’re dropping our personnel to go down and recover the body.”
Rescuers recovered the woman’s body around 4 p.m.

No immediate information was available on how the collision occurred.
A sign near the staging area warns visitors that off-roading on the narrow dirt truck trails “may be hazardous.”
