A 77-year-old man driving in the wrong direction died after a head-on collision with a state trooper vehicle, police said Thursday night.
The Millsboro man, who was not properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier, a spokesman for Delaware State Police. A family dog was also deceased in the vehicle, Fournier said.
The 22-year-old male state trooper involved in the crash was airlifted from the scene to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Fournier said.
The crash occurred in the area of the North Little Creek Road Exit (Exit 98) just before 6 p.m. Thursday, Fournier said.
The Millsboro man was operating a 2010 Chevrolet Aveo northbound in the southbound lanes of Del.1, police said.
At the same time, the trooper, assigned out of Troop 3 in Camden, was operating a fully marked 2012 Chevrolet Caprice southbound in the left lane of Del. 1 near Exit 98 when the two vehicles collided head-on. The state trooper was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, police said.
