A woman was killed in a crash on I-69 in DeSoto County, Mississippi when a wrong-way driver hit the vehicle she was riding in head on.
Charges are expected against the woman who caused the crash; she is also in the hospital. Investigators are working to determine whether alcohol played a role in the accident.
According to Desoto County Sheriff's Office, the woman was driving eastbound in the westbound lane of I-69 when she crashed head-on with a car driven by a couple from Olive Branch.
Hai Thi Lam was killed on the scene. Her husband, Hung Pham, remains in the hospital.
Moments before the accident, Darlena Adcox says the same wrong-way driver almost hit her daughter, Jenny Pearson.
"It was that close that it could have been her," Adcox said. "It could have been her and she would not be here today."
Pearson was driving home on I-69 when she passed the wrong-way driver.
"The other side of the road, they were flashing their lights at me, so when I looked back over, he was just coming, so I swerved over," said Pearson. "Praying for the other families because Thanksgiving, and that man, he lost his wife.
"Crash investigators are still trying to figure out how the wrong-way driver ended up on the wrong side of the interstate. There are metal wire barriers that go all the way up the highway separating both lanes of traffic.
The woman who was driving the wrong way will face charges in the crash, but until it is determined whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, those charges will not be decided.
