DARTMOUTH, MA : State Police have identified the victim of a fatal car crash on May, Thursday, 18th 2017
State Police have identified the victim of a fatal car crash on Interstate 195 Thursday as a New Bedford woman.
According to police, Stephanie Merejildo, 21, from New Bedford died at the scene of the crash. They say both the driver and juvenile passenger remain hospitalized. Police on Thursday said the driver was airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries. There was no condition for the juvenile.
State Troopers responded to the area of Reed Road at approximately 1:35 p.m. Thursday following reports of a single-vehicle crash.
The initial investigation determined a 1998 Honda Civic occupied by two women and a juvenile was traveling in the left lane on the eastbound side when the vehicle swerved sharply to the right. The Honda then traveled across all eastbound lanes, entering the soft shoulder on the breakdown land facing rearward. The Honda then struck a tree, causing severe damage to the vehicle. All occupants had to be extricated by Dartmouth fire.
Police said one female passenger was determined dead at the scene. The female driver was airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The child was also airlifted and taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital with unknown injuries.
Police said Thursday they were investigating if speed was a factor, as well as if the victims were wearing seatbelts. There was no update on those factors Friday.
