STOW, OH : One dead in tanker crash, fire on Ohio 8 in Stow on Friday, 28th October 2022

A man died in a fuel tanker truck crash and fire early Friday on Ohio 8, police said.

The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway between Steels Corners and Graham roads exits, according to Stow police and fire officials.

The driver of the tanker died in the crash, officials said. The Summit County Medical Examiner has not yet released the name of the driver.

The crash caused some 8,500 gallons of gasoline to spill over the highway. A video from Ohio Department of Transportation traffic cameras shows the truck driving south before a large explosion that sent plumes of smoke into the sky.

Firefighters from Stow, Cuyahoga Falls, Kent, Hudson and Valley Fire District helped extinguish the blaze.

ODOT officials told police the road is now safe to drive on. Travel in the far left lane has since resumed, but crews remain on scene.
