La PORTE, IN : Bicyclist killed in collision with semi on Monday, August 7, 2017
A bicyclist was killed on Monday evening after reportedly running a red light and being struck by a semi-driver at 515 J St. in La Porte.
Glen Byrely, 53, of Hammond, died of blunt force trauma as a result of the collision, said La Porte County Coroner Bob Cutler, stating the injury could not even be attributed to one area in particular.
"His body was injured all over," Cutler said.
According to a witness report given to the La Porte Police Department, Byrely was riding his bicycle westbound on 6th Street and disregarded a red light where the road intersected with J Street.
The semi-truck, driven by a 63-year-old from Wisconsin, was unable to stop before striking Byrely.
According to Buddy Kasinger, public information officer for La Porte County EMS, Byrely was reported as being unconscious and not breathing as the call came in.
“The medic rig said when they pulled up, bystanders were doing CPR on him,” Kasinger said.
A MedFlight helicopter was originally requested as the victim was in critical condition. Kasinger said paramedics mobilized Byrely quickly and since the helicopter had an ETA of 18 minutes, they elected to transport him to the hospital to be airlifted from there.
Byrely would never make it to the helicopter, however.
“They got him to La Porte Hospital and they worked on him for quite awhile. They got pulses back but then they lost it again… they couldn’t get it back so they pronounced him at La Porte Hospital,” Kasinger said.
Blood and urine tests were ordered by Cutler to determine if Byrely had any substances in his system, per regular protocol.
In response to the accident, part of J Street and Ind. 2 was closed to traffic. Later Monday, a La Porte police officer became involved in a one-vehicle accident in this area. The officer was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for injuries.
According to a report from the La Porte Police Department, Officer Trent Mamazza, after assisting with the fatal accident, cleared the scene and was heading to inform a state highway employee to reopen the road at about 9:48 p.m. when he encountered a barricade in the roadway near the 1100 block of Ind. 2.
Mamazza reportedly swerved to miss the object in the roadway and struck a utility pole. He was taken to La Porte Hospital for treatment of a head and arm injury, but was then transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital.
“They felt the injuries warranted taking him to a trauma center,” Kasinger said, stating the officer was transported with lights and sirens by ambulance to South Bend.
Mamazza was listed as being in stable condition.
