Phoenix, AZ: I-17 lanes reopen at Dixileta after deadly crash on Monday, July 27th 2015
Southbound lanes of Interstate 17 are reopening at Dixileta Drive following a morning crash that left two people dead.The accident initially closed all lanes around 6 a.m. except the HOV lane on Interstate 17 southbound at Dixileta Drive.Backups extended two miles as officers investigated the accident, the Arizona Department of Transportation tweeted.Video from the newschopper showed a smashed vehicle resting underneath the back end of the commercial tractor-trailer truck.DPS spokesman Tim Case said the semi was broken down in the emergency lane and the driver had properly placed reflective warning triangles by his rig to warn motorists.“For an unknown reason, the van came over and hit the rear of the semi truck," Case said.Three people were in the van. Two of them, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead at the scene and the driver was rushed to a local hospital.Case said the driver of the semi was not hurt.Troopers said impairment has not been ruled out.
