A man died after the car he was driving struck a horse in northeast Minnesota on Sunday night.

Richard E. Godbout, 49, of Cromwell, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near the intersection of Spirit Lake Road with Minnesota 210 in Carlton County about five miles east of Cromwell.

The accident was reported at 10:20 p.m.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the westbound 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt that Godbout was driving struck the horse on the roadway. A passenger in the car, Brian L. Larson, 49, of Liberty, Texas, was injured and taken to a local hospital. The State Patrol reported Larson did not appear to have any major injuries.

Another car, also westbound on Highway 210, also struck the horse immediately after the first collision.

Neither the driver of the 2001 Chevrolet HHR, Benjamin W. Hendrickson, 31, of Wright, nor the passenger, 34-year-old Brooke E. Scharte, appeared to be injured.
