LAKE ELSINORE, CA : Passenger killed in Ortega highway crash on Saturday, August 19, 2017

Authorities Monday, released the name of a teenage passenger killed when a Pontiac Firebird overturned on the Ortega (74) Highway west of Lake Elsinore.

Jonathan Gonzalez, 17, of Anaheim was fatally injured shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday in the speed-related crash on the westbound 74, roughly two miles east of the Orange County line, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Mike Lassig said Gonzalez was riding with 18-year-old Eric Yarel Breniz of Anaheim, who failed to negotiate a bend in the two-lane road while allegedly traveling at an excessive speed.

The motorist “ran off the roadway, striking the adjacent steel guardrail,” Lassig said. “Upon impact, the vehicle went airborne over the guardrail, where the right side collided into a large tree and the vehicle came to rest on its top, facing in a westerly direction.”

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived a minutes later and pronounced Gonzalez dead at the scene.

Breniz suffered major injuries in the crash and was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar.
