Clinton Township, MI : An elderly Clinton Township man was killed in a vehicle crash On Tuesday, April 26th, 2016
Clinton Township, Michigan
An elderly Clinton Township man was killed Tuesday morning when he apparently ran a red light and was struck by a semi-tractor trailer, according to police.
Police said the 94-year-old man was driving a silver 2005 Buick Century west on 19 Mile Road about 8:45 a.m. when he struck the car, which was going north on Garfield Road.
The car ended up lodged beneath the truck, Clinton Township police Sgt. Chris Allis said in a news release. The driver of the car, who was traveling alone, was pronounced dead at the scene, he added.
Allis said the truck driver, who was not injured, immediately stopped and remained at the scene until emergency personnel arrived.
Police are still working to determine which driver had the green light and which one had the red signal. The speed limit for both Garfield and 19 Mile roads is 45 mph.
Preliminary indications are alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash for the semi truck driver.
Detective Capt. Richard Maierle said it’s possible the driver may have suffered a medical condition prior to the collision. He said the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office may be able to determine whether any underlying medical conditions
that may have played a role in the incident.
Police closed all lanes of Garfield Road between 19 Mile and Healthier Way for about five hours as officers conducted their investigation.
All lanes of Garfield were re-opened about 2 p.m., said police Lt. Curt Randall.
