Orlando, FL : Woman killed in deputy-involved crash on West Oak Ridge Road on Monday, October 13, 2014
A 34-year-old Orlando woman is dead after she was hit by an Orange County Sheriff's Office deputy cruiser while trying to cross Oak Ridge Road.
It happened around 3:15 a.m. Monday along the 940 block of West Oak Ridge Road near Chipola Circle.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Deputy Eric Rivera, 38, was traveling eastbound as Susan Roman was trying to cross Oak Ridge from north to south. Troopers said they believe Deputy Rivera was responding to a possible robbery call, but did not have his sirens or emergency lights on at the time.
"When the impact occurred, the deputy was in the bidirectional turn lane. The pedestrian was in the bidirectional turn lane," said FHP Sgt. Kim Montes.
After Roman was hit by the deputy, she struck the side of a Toyota pickup.
Roman was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Troopers are still investigating why the deputy was driving in the turn lane and how fast he was going.
Rivera, who was not injured, did not stay at the scene to give FHP investigators a statement about the crash. He is now seeking legal counsel.
West Oak Ridge Road was closed for several hours between Orange Blossom Trail and and Winegard Road. However, it has since reopened.
