One man is dead and a woman was transported to The Memorial Hospital after a single-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 13 near mile marker 112 early Monday morning.
Craig Fire/Rescue Lt. Chris Mercer confirmed the fatality but said Colorado State Patrol was in charge of the accident scene and he could not provide much detail.
According to a news release from CSP, “A 2003 Mercury Mountaineer was traveling southbound on Colorado Hwy 13 near mile marker 111 when the driver lost control of the Mercury in an attempt to avoid a deer in the roadway. After losing control on the roadway, the Mercury traveled off the left side of the roadway, down a slight embankment, and then rolled striking a fence.”
The 57-year-old driver from Vernal was pronounced dead on the scene. His passenger, a 51-year-old woman from Missouri, was transported to TMH with minor injuries.
Both of the vehicle’s occupants, whose names have not been released, were wearing seat belts and drugs or alcohol are not expected to be factors in the crash.
First responders were called to the scene at 5:30 a.m.
Responding agencies include, Craig Fire/Rescue, TMH EMS, CSP, Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Moffat County Coroner and Colorado Department of Transportation.
Two trucks and eleven responders from Craig Fire/Rescue were on the scene at one point, Mercer said.
