MAPLE GROVE TWP, MI : Fatal motorcycle crash on Ditch Road under investigation on Thursday, 10th November 2016

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Tri-City Post are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred on Ditch Road east of Lincoln Road in Maple Grove Township on Thursday, Nov. 10.

At approximately 5:13 p.m., citizens traveling on Ditch Road came upon a male subject, wearing a motorcycle helmet, laying in the traffic lanes. The two citizens stopped and discovered a crashed motorcycle. They called 911 and reported the crash to Saginaw County Dispatch.

After calling 911, the citizens observed that the victim was not breathing and began CPR. Medical personnel arrived on scene and took over. Unfortunately, the combined efforts were unsuccessful and the motorcycle operator was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other riders/ passengers were involved in the crash. There were no witnesses at the crash scene when troopers and medical personnel arrived.

The motorcycle driver was identified as a 66-year-old male resident of Birch Run. The driver was known to be an avid, experienced rider.

Initial on-scene investigation indicated that the motorcycle was traveling east on Ditch Road. Evidence of braking was observed on the roadway with increased braking becoming more apparent until the driver lost control and separated from the motorcycle. Investigators also located fresh, wet deer tracks on the north side of Ditch Road that correlated with the path of the motorcycle. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this incident and the rider was wearing a helmet.

The investigation is on-going into the cause of the crash and investigators are asking that anyone who may have information about this crash or possibly witnessed the crash to call the Tri-City Post at (989) 495-5559.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Department, Twin Township Ambulance Service, Maple Grove Fire Department, and Michigan State Police Third District Accident Reconstructionist.
