Statesville, NC : One person killed and another seriously injured in a crash involving a motorcycle in Statesville on Saturday, April 9, 2016

One person was killed and another seriously injured in a crash involving a motorcycle in Statesville Saturday. A second crash involving a tractor trailer happened about a half hour later near the scene.

The fatal accident happened just before 3:30 p.m. on I-40 at mile marker 144, near the exit for Old Mountain Road. Officials said the wreck involved a motorcycle and two other vehicles.

David Allen Laws was driving the motorcycle and was killed in the collision. A passenger on the motorcycle was transported to an area hospital with severe injuries.

Troopers say Laws was merging onto the interstate when he clipped the rear of one vehicle. That caused the motorcycle to drive into the left lane where it was struck by a second vehicle.

A second crash happened around 4 p.m. a mile up the road near mile marker 145. Police said that crash involved a tractor trailer and a passenger vehicle. The officers did not say if any injuries were reported in that incident.

Westbound I-40 was shut down between the Old Mountain Road exit and the Stamey Farm Road exit while crews worked at both crash sites.

Investigators have not said if any charges are being filed.
