Surgoinsville, TN : Two in critical condition in head-on collision in Hawkins County on Tuesday afternoon, October 4, 2016
Two people remained in critical condition Wednesday stemming from a head-on collision that closed a section of East Main Street in Surgoinsville for three hours Tuesday afternoon.
According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol preliminary report, Jerome Spaulding, 73, of Surgoinsville, was driving a 2010 Chevy Impala east on Main Street Tuesday around 3 p.m. when for unknown reasons he crossed the center line.
A 2011 Kia Soul driven by Sharon Sillery, 44, of Surgoinville, was struck by the Impala near the Bales Chapel Road intersection.
Neither vehicle had passengers, and the THP report said both drivers were wearing a seat belt, which “definitely contributed to this crash not being fatal.”
Spaulding and Sillery were both pinned in their vehicles.
The Surgoinsville Fire Department, Hawkins County Rescue Squad and Hawkins County EMS responded to the scene.
Witnesses said the extrication process took about a half hour for each driver, after which both were transported via Hawkins EMS to Holston Valley Medical Center.
East Main Street remained closed for three hours from the Phipps Bend intersection to the old Terry Glass Construction building.
As of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Spaulding and Sillery remained at HVMC, both listed in critical condition.
According to the THP preliminary report released Wednesday, “It is unknown at this time what caused (Spaulding) to cross into the oncoming lane. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected.”
