Calumet Township, IN : Drunken driver blamed in Borman crash on Interstate 80/94 near Burr Street in Gary on Saturday, 22nd September 2018

State police said a drunken driver triggered a three-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on the Borman Expressway.

Police said Charlton Johnson, 42, had a blood alcohol level twice the legal intoxication level of .08 percent.

Johnson was westbound on Interstate 80/94 near Burr Street in Gary at 3:10 p.m. when he began to drive his 2003 Ford Focus on the outer shoulder.

Police said Johnson’s car struck a 2009 Chrysler Sebring driven by Shanequa Carter, 23, of Merrillville. The impact caused Carter to lose control and go southwest across westbound lanes and strike a concrete barrier wall on the inner shoulder.

The Sebring went back across westbound lanes and hit a 2014 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by Tyrone Jones, 43, of Knoxville, Tenn. The impact caused the Kenworth’s rear tandem/wheels to separate from the trailer.

Police said Carter was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus in Gary for non-life-threatening injuries. Johnson and Jones were not injured.

Police took Johnson to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point where he was charged with operating while intoxicated.
