Conroe, TX : 5-Months-old child ejected father flees from scene on Sunday night July 20th 2014
Investigators are still searching for a man who crashed his car then fled the scene, leaving an injured 5-month-old baby behind.
The crash happened just after 10 p.m. Sunday on East Williams Road near South Williams Road. The man lost control of his car, flipped it several times and the baby boy was ejected from the backseat. DPS troopers said there was a car seat in the vehicle but the baby was not properly restrained.
Witnesses told Local 2 the infant was ejected from the rear window.
"The baby was bleeding," said David Davis, a witnesses who lives nearby. "The baby was scarred on his face and had road rash."
Davis said the baby was so still that he didn't cry. He said he thought it was a doll until he saw him blink his eyes.
"(He was) docile, just laying there. He didn't even move," he said.
The driver of the car, who has not been identified, took off running from the scene, according to investigators.
"I see a guy running in front of my shop with a red hoodie on," Davis said. He saw the man take off through the woods and told Local 2 he was identified at the scene as the baby's father.
DPS troopers have not said if the driver and the baby are related.
"The mother showed up about 5-10 minutes after the crash in a different car," Davis said. "At first she told a multitude of stories; one of them was that the car was stolen at the gas station with the baby in the back seat. She finally ended up telling them the truth."
The baby's mother reportedly told police she and the baby's father had been arguing and that he took off with the infant.
According to investigators, the driver was speeding when the crash happened.
The baby boy was flown to the hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery.
Charges are pending against the driver of the car.
