Three people were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a car and a school van collided on Routes 5 and 10 in front of Richardson’s Candy Kitchen in Deerfield Monday.
Deerfield police declined to comment at the scene, but wrote in a news release following the crash that the drivers of both vehicles and a student were transported by South County EMS to Baystate Franklin Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The other two students in the van were picked up by family members at the scene.
The school van was transporting children from Valley West School in Chicopee to their homes in Franklin County when the crash occurred around 3 p.m., according to the release. The other vehicle was a blue Toyota Camry with Connecticut license plates.
Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage to the drivers’ sides and debris was strewn across the roadway. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, according to the release.
The road was closed for 45 minutes while the scene was cleared.
Family members of the school van driver arrived at the scene after hearing about the crash from another relative.
“She just got a cut on her arm and she probably messed up her knee,” said Kristie Lueders of Greenfield, the woman’s daughter. “She’s visibly shaken.”
The occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts, according to the release. The Deerfield and South Deerfield fire departments also responded to the scene.
