Authorities have charged Amanda Colleen Hall, 42, of Portland, with reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death and driving on a revoked license.
Sumner County sheriff's officials said Hall struck Briana Lowe, a student at Portland East Middle School, while she was walking back on Dobbins Pike from a nearby Dollar General Store.
Investigators are still trying to determine the possibility of alcohol in relation to the case.
Lowe was walking with a friend back from a store on Dobbins Pike when she was hit by a car from behind just before 9:30 p.m.
She had left a note for her mom saying, “If you're reading this, we walked to the dollar store.”
Instead of Lowe returning home, a man with a flashlight had words a parent hopes they never hear.
It's not fair what's happened to her. It's not,” said Joyce Jacobs, Lowe's mom. “That girl didn't deserve that. I don't deserve it.”
Authorities said Hall struck Lowe, killing her instantly, then drove off.
“Can't even stop to see if she's all right. Nothing,” said Jacobs.
Jacobs said Lowe's friend wasn't hurt physically, but emotionally destroyed.
“She feels a lot of guilt because she couldn't help her,” said Jacobs. “She said as soon as it hit her, it killed her.
“So there's nothing she could do but just cry over her friend. Could you imagine that kid?”
Lowe was an eighth grader at Portland East Middle School. She loved animals and had big dreams.
“She wanted to be an underwater scuba diver cameraman. That's what she wanted to do,” said her mom. “She talked about it her whole life.”
Jacobs is thankful for their last words to one another.
“My last words were I love you and hers were the same to me,” said Jacobs.
“Take care of your kids because this could happen and they're gone that quick. I still can't rack my head around this. It don't seem real to me.”
