Charlotte, North Carolina
One person was killed and two people were hurt in an accident on east W.T. Harris Boulevard, Saturday afternoon.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say the driver, 44-year-old Angel Adams, experienced a "medical episode" while driving on east WT Harris Boulevard just past University City Boulevard.
The crash happened just before 3 p.m.
According to reports, Adams had episode and drove her car into another car. Then, Adams' vehicle went off the right side of the road where she hit several street signs and utility poles. The car then flipped several times before stopping on the side of the road.
Betty Adams, 71, was ejected from the back seat of the car and pronounced dead on scene by Medic.
Angel Adams and a front passenger were injured in the crash and taken to Carolinas Medical Center. The driver of the other car was not hurt.
According to CMPD, witnesses and the front passenger believe that the medical episode caused Adams to accelerate and drive off the road. Both passengers reportedly tried to regain control the car before it crashed.
“It’s just sad that that person was probably thinking about Christmas or what they needed to do or go to the grocery store and instead of them getting ready for the holidays, now their family is going to be getting ready for a funeral and that’s just sad to me,” said Fonda Bryant, a witness who saw the aftermath.of the crash.
Police have determined that speed was a factor in the crash. Betty Adams was not wearing a seat belt, police say.
The crash is still under investigation.
