Tualatin, OR : 33-year-old Omar Ramirez-Lopez was killed after left the road and hit a tree at Southwest Durham Road On Wednesday, July 13th, 2016
A Tualatin man is dead after a motorcycle crash in Tualatin early Wednesday, officials said.
The Tualatin Police Department responded to Southwest Upper Boones Ferry Road near Southwest Durham Road at 3:05 a.m., Capt. Greg Pickering said in a news release Wednesday morning.
Officers believe the motorcycle rider, 33-year-old Omar Ramirez-Lopez, failed to make a turn, left the road and hit a tree, Pickering said.
While it's too early to say whether speed was a factor in the crash, spokeswoman Jennifer Massey said by phone that "it's always looked at as a possibility."
Ramirez-Lopez died at the scene, she said.
A recent spate of fatal motorcycle crashes prompted a state police safety warning earlier this month, after at least six motorcyclists died on Oregon roads within a 10-day period.
Speed was a factor in four of the six crashes, initial investigations indicated.
Deadly crashes are on the rise in general, reflecting a national trend, state police Capt. Bill Fugate has said.
Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable in crashes, as they "are just not protected," he said.
The state transportation website advises motorcyclists to dress appropriately in helmets and protective gear, avoid speeding and take basic training courses.
