Carlisle, PA : Motor vehicle vs. bicycle crashes on February, Wednesday 14th 2018
Between the beginning of 2007 and the end of 2016, a total of 245 crashes were reported involving a motor vehicle and bicycle in Cumberland County, according to PennDOT.
About a quarter of all of these crashes, 61, occurred in Carlisle, PennDOT data showed.
That was the highest percentage for any municipality in the county.
Hampden Township and Mechanicsburg were tied for second with 24 crashes, or the equivalent of about 10 percent of the crashes in the county between 2007 and 2016 involving a bicyclist, according to PennDOT.
All other municipalities were below 20 crashes during the 10-year time frame.
On average there were about 23 crashes a year during that period, with a low of 16 in 2009 and a high of 37 in 2013, according to PennDOT.
Much of the increase in 2013 was driven by a spike in vehicle versus bicycle crashes in Carlisle that year.
Between 2007 and 2012, Carlisle averaged about six crashes per year, but jumped to 14 crashes in 2013 before dropping back to an average of 4 crashes per year between 2014 and 2016, PennDOT reported.
More than half of all crashes occurred at an intersection, while about 40 percent occurred somewhere other than an intersection, PennDOT data showed.
There were a total of 26 crashes that involved a fatality or a suspected major injury, with half occurring at an intersection and half somewhere other than an intersection.
Only 13 crashes were alcohol related and just three involved a motorist who was speeding, according to PennDOT.
However, two of the three crashes involving a speeding motorist resulted in a fatality or a serious injury.
