Edwardsville, IL : SIUE officer, Wood River woman both injured in crash involving patrol vehicle on Route 157 and Center Grove Road on Tuesday afternoon, February 3, 2015

Two people were hurt, including a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville police officer, in a crash involving the officer's police vehicle Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened at about 1:30 p.m. at Illinois Route 157 and Center Grove Road in Edwardsville, said Edwardsville Police Chief Jay Keeven. Brittanie Schaefer, 25, of Wood River, was driving a car and was airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital. The officer, Ryan Bandy, 29, was driving a marked police sedan and was taken to Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Keeven said.

Keeven didn't know the extent of their injuries or how the crash happened. He said at least one witness at the scene said Bandy had his lights and sirens activated at the time of the crash.

Illinois State Police are handling the crash reconstruction and Edwardsville police are also investigating.
