STAFFORD, NY : Batavia man killed in Route 5 crash on Friday, 16th March 2018
A Batavia man was killed when he lost control of his pickup truck and slammed head-on into a 10-wheel truck on Route 5 early Friday morning, Genesee County sheriff’s deputies said.
Thomas J. Manzella, 24, was driving west on Route 5 near Clipnock Road about 6:30 a.m. when his 2007 Chevrolet pickup spun counterclockwise and into the eastbound lane. The pickup was hit by an eastbound Mack rolloff container truck driven by Curtiss Mallory, 32, of Buffalo.
Both vehicles were knocked off the road, with Mallory immediately calling 911.
Stafford volunteer firefighters had to cut Manzella from his truck. He was taken to United Memorial Medical Center, where he died as a result of injuries. Mallory suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Deputies said blowing snow and icy roads were factors in the crash.
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation crews were called to contain a small fuel spill from the Mack truck. Route 5 was closed for about three hours.
