A N.C. Central University student who was a passenger in a car that crashed into a concrete bridge railing on northbound U.S. 15-501 at West Cornwallis Road in Durham late Tuesday was killed and the man driving the car was seriously hurt, police said.

Police identified the student as Brittany Plummer, 27, of Durham. They said she was a senior.

The driver, Melvin Jamal Brewington, 23, was taken to Duke University Hospital with what police described as serious injuries.

Brewington was driving a 2013 Hyundai when it veered to the right and smashed into the barrier on the bridge shortly before midnight, police said. They said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, which remained under investigation Wednesday.

The state Department of Transportation said the right lane of the road was closed, likely until 4 p.m. Wednesday, and police said engineers were checking the bridge for damage.
