Santa Fe, NM : Former Santa Fe officer killed in motorcycle crash on Tuesday,6th September 2016
Louis Montoya, who completed his service at the Santa Fe Police Department less than one year ago, was killed in a Labor Day weekend motorcycle crash in Guadalupe County.
At first it was disbelief, followed by a flood of emotions," Sgt. Adam Gallegos said.
The flag at the New Mexico Law Enforcement Training Center remains at half-staff in honor of two New Mexico police officers recently killed in the line of duty. But in Santa Fe, friends and family remembered Montoya.
"Louis was just a very caring individual, in everything he did, whether it be law enforcement or life," Gallegos said.
He remembered him as a family man and a friend as well.
"He loved his grandchildren. Every time we traveled, his main focus was to get his souvenirs for his grand kids," Gallegos said. “The biggest thing is, everybody would just talk about his smile and how he was always happy. He was always in a good mood and would put people at ease."
Montoya was a member of the local motorcycle group the 505 Baggers which routinely does community service work.
On the bike and working with the community is where friends said Montoya was most comfortable.
"We did a lot of motorcycling together," Gallegos said. "We traveled a lot. We did a bunch of different runs to include Sturgis and Arizona Bike Week. We got really close during that time."
Montoya's family chose not to speak on camera but wanted him remembered for his service to the nation.
A sergeant first class, Montoya completed two tours of duty with the U.S. Army in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was 59 years old.
