Killeen, TX : School bus accident disputed on February, Thursday 8th 2018
Floyd Smith never expected his car would be hit by a school bus.
That is what happened Thursday afternoon on Elms Road in Killeen, however.
The initial report of the accident, which occurred near Florence Road, indicated Smith's car hit the school bus.
The Killeen Independent School District now has clarified that wasn't the case.
"We’ve been told the driver of the bus was cited for failing to yield right of way," said Terry Abbout, KISD chief communications officer.
Ofelia Miramontez, spokeswoman for the Killeen Police Department, confirmed the citation.
Smith had turned onto Elms Road from Stonegate Estates and was positioned eastbound in the median, he said. He was not moving due to lots of traffic.
He noticed the school bus turning onto Elms Road, and that the driver was looking in the opposite direction. Smith said he blew his horn, but the bus was already moving onto Elms.
"It was kind of a little jolt," Smith said. He described the damage to his car as caving in the hood.
After Smith spoke with Killeen police who responded to the accident, he left the scene, but returned when he was called. At that point, emergency medical technicians were on scene, he said, checking students who'd been riding the bus for injuries.
"No one hurt in the accident," Abbott said.
