NORTH JAVA, NY : Arcade man flown to ECMC following tanker crash on Wednesday, September 20th 2017
A one-vehicle, milk-tanker crash Wednesday afternoon sent a 24-year-old Arcade man to Erie County Medical Center by mercy flight.
The incident took place at the intersection between Route 98 and Beaver Meadow Road.
According to Captain Erik Tamol, of the Wyoming County Sheriff’s office, the man had just loaded the tanker with milk from a farm on Beaver Meadow Road. The driver then drove east toward Route 98 when he crossed over Route 98 into a ravine.
In the process of crossing Route 98, the truck rolled over on its driver side and landed there in the ravine that Tamol estimated is about 30-feet deep.
Brake marks along the road indicate that he attempted to stop, Tamol said, adding that the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. Tamol said it’s not known if a medical issue caused the crash.
Many different Emergency Medical Service vehicles arrived on scene to extricate the man through either the windshield or passenger window. Tamol said the man was verbally communicating the whole time.
“It took a few minutes to get him out,” the deputy said.
According to Tamol, the man sustained chest and leg injuries Tamol believed to be “not real severe.”
