Wakarusa, IN : 17-year-old killed, two others badly hurt in crash on S.R. 19 near Wakarusa on Sunday, March 19, 2017
One 17-year-old boy was killed and two other 17-year-olds were badly hurt in a three-vehicle crash north of Wakarusa on Sunday.
A silver Toyota Camry with two 17-year-old boys and two 17-year-old girls inside was traveling east on C.R. 36 when it drove into the path of a 2003 GMC Sierra traveling south on S.R. 19 about a mile north of Wakarusa around 7:45 p.m., according to a preliminary report from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.
The 62-year-old woman driving the Sierra could not avoid a collision and hit the Camry in the rear driver's side corner. After the impact, the Sierra slid into the northbound lane, where it sideswiped a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling north on S.R. 19.
The Ram driver, a 38-year-old man from Pikeville, Kentucky, was unable to stop after being sideswiped and slammed into the passenger side of the Camry, the sheriff's department said.
A 17-year-old boy in the Camry was pronounced dead at an area hospital, police said. Another 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old female passenger both were transported to area hospitals unconscious and in critical condition. The 17-year-old girl driving the Camry also was transported to an area hospital, but her condition was not released.
The sheriff's department did not release the names of the teens involved pending notification of family.
