Grand Island, NY : Man charged with DWI after crashing into NY river on Monday, December 29, 2014
Authorities say a 44-year-old Buffalo-area man was drunk when he crashed his sport utility vehicle into the Niagara River and had to be rescued by firefighters.
The Erie County Sheriff's Office tells local media that the Orchard Park resident was driving on a riverside road in the town of Grand Island around 5:30 p.m. Monday when he veered into the water.
The vehicle wound up about 100 feet from shore. The driver was able to get out of the partially submerged SUV, but had to be helped to shore by firefighters after he got stuck in about three feet of water.
Deputies say they charged the man with driving while intoxicated and several other traffic violations.
The SUV was towed out of the river.
